Unlike the public library, a school Library Media Center is an instructional area especially tailored to your curriculum. For those students who become comfortably familiar with its resources and how to use them, the reward in terms of academic achievement can be considerable.

The staff's instructional task is to teach users to best way to use resources. In this way, the Library Media Staff plays an important role in your academic success. In addition to instruction, the Media Specialist, aided by her staff, develops the library collection and facility, collaborates with teachers to design the best learning experiences for students, and builds bridges with the community through development of our website: http:// www.annapolishigh.org.

Whenever you need help, please ask. We are here to help you succeed in your learning.

Borrowing Materials [contents]

Borrowing Material

All material taken from the library must first be checked-out at the circulation desk.

Since the AHS library uses a computerized check-out system, in most cases you have already been assigned a barcode number and are included in our system prior to your first visit to the media center. If there is a problem, see a media staff member and we will add your name to our user database.

Books and magazines may be borrowed for 3 weeks. When you checkout at the circulation desk, the return date is stamped on a sticker on the back of the book.Overdue notices are sent out every other week and are distributed through your first period teacher/

You may borrow up to three books at one time, but only two on the same topic at the same checkout time.

Reference materials must be used in the Media Center only. They do not circulate. (But you may make free copies of up to five pages)

Returns/Renewals

Return library materials by the date due

Book slots are found in the circulation desk.

Material may be renewed (borrowed for another loan period) as long as it is not on reserve. See the media staff.

Overdues

No overdue fines are charged.  However, you are responsible for the cost of lost materials.

The due date stamped at time of checkout is your main reminder of when materials are due. Notices are sent to your first period teacher after your books are overdue. If materials continue to be overdue, you will receive an obligation slip and may not receive your report card until you return the book or pay for the obligation.

Students with overdues may not borrow other materials until the book is returned or obligation settled.

Long term problems with not returning library materials may be referred to an administrator for additional action.

Lost or Damaged Material

Library users are responsible for the library material they borrow and must pay for lost or damaged items. Report lost or damaged material as soon as possible.

Found Books

If you find any Annapolis High School library material, please return it to the library as soon as possible.

Visiting the Library Media Center [contents]

Passes

Students must have a pass to come to the library unless the teacher has made other arrangements in advance for a visit from class. Up to five students from each class can be accomodated during class periods for independent use. No pass is needed to come to the library before or after school..

Lunchtime

Up to fifteen students may reserve a space to come to the library from the cafeteria during each lunch shift. If leaving the cafeteria, students must have gotten a pass from Media staff before 1st  period and have a task in mind which requires the use of the libraryVisiting the Media Center simply to socialize is not supported by the Media staff. Because of the switch to the four period block schedule, we have established additional new procedures as explained below and we extend special privileges for deadlines and important assignments if requested.

Important Information About Lunch Passes

Our slogan is -L before M. Take care of locker and lavatory before coming to Media during lunch:
1. If you are coming from class and staying for your entire lunch period, sign in when you arrive.
2. If you are coming to Media and then going to lunch, sign in and when you are ready to leave, get a pass to go to the cafeteria.

Behavior in the Library

Please present your pass and sign in at the circulation desk as soon as you enter the Media Center.

Everyone is expected to be courteous and to respect their fellow students, the school staff, the library facility, its furnishings and the library materials.  The environment is to be peaceful, quiet, and orderly.  There is no eating or drinking permitted in the Media Center.
