Attention Annapolis High School students, currently your school is looking for Peer mediators.  If you are interested come forth and notify Ms. Martin in the guidance office for more details.  Peer mediating offers many opportunities for students in and beyond high school.  If you are looking for a way to contribute to your school, this is the perfect opportunity.  Peer mediators are recognized leaders in schools nation wide.

The Goals of Peer Mediation

  1. To improve the overall school climate by promoting an understanding and respect for differences and diversity.
  2. To reduce violence, suspensions, expulsions, and absenteeism through peer-based intervention.
  3. To reduce the amount of teacher, counselor, and administrative time spent on discipline.
  4. To empower students through an increase in responsibility, confidence, morale, and anger control.
  5. To reach agreements which addresses the interest of both parties, and develop cooperation in solving common problems.

The Role of the Peer Mediator

·        Mediators must understand their own conflicts and how to handle them.
·        Mediators must act as helpers, not disciplinarians.
·        Mediators must remain neutral and respect all points of view.
·        Mediators must never give advice or must not solve problems for disputants.
·        Mediators must always practice good communication skills: Active listening, Body  language, and I Messages
