Annapolis High School is a modified open space, comprehensive high school accredited by the Middle states Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. We have a student body of approximately 1750 in grades nine through twelve and a faculty of approximately 105. We are located on Riva Road in East Central Anne Arundel County, four miles from downtown historic Annapolis, Maryland.

Annapolis High School has an attendance area that includes the Incorporated City of Annapolis, and portions of the surrounding Anne Arundel County area. Our district is bounded by the Severn River on the North, by the South River on the South, by the Chesapeake Bay on the East, and from Round Bay to the headwaters of the South River on the West. The district contains approximately 53,000 people of which 18% (10,000) are of school age.

Grading System and Class Rankings

Grades are awarded in four nine week grading periods and two final exams. Final exams are required for each semester and count as 20% of the semester grade. All classes are semesterized.

Class Rank is compiled from the student's grade point average in descending order. Equal rank is given to the same grade point average. All subjects taken for credit are considered equally in computing the grade point average.

Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SAT's)

For 2004, Annapolis High School Average SAT scores were 516 Verbal and 523 Math. The mean SAT scores nationally were 505 Verbal and 520 Math. The school results reflect the scores of a wide range of students since students of all ability levels take the examination.

Academic Eligibility

Academic eligibility requirments specify that in order to participate in any extracurricular activity, a student must maintain a 2.0 GPA with a maximum of one "E".

Athletic Competition

Athletic competition is availible to all students who have passed a physical by a physician, have accident insurance and meet academic requirements. Sports offered include the following: Cross Country, Field Hockey, Football, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Indoor Track, Wrestling, Baseball, Gymnastics, Lacrosse, Softball, Tennis, Track and Field.

Academic Highlights

Advanced placement courses include: English, US History , Modem European History, American Government, Economics, Biology , Chemistry , Physics C, Calculus AB and BC, Latin, Independent Study, Psychology , Music (Listening and Theory), Statistics and Computer Science. AP Language and Literature are offered for German, French and Spanish.

The International Baccalaureate (IB)Program is available for students in grade11 & 12.  The IB program is a rigorous academic program which incorporates intercultural experiences with a challenging curriculum.  Students apply in grade 8 to enroll in the Extended Learning Program (ELP).  The ELP is available for students in grade 9 & 10 and prepares them for the IB program.

Eligible Seniors may qualify for concurrent enrollment in local colleges and/or partial schedules (4 classes). The Center of Applied Technology at South River offers Vo-tech programs to Annapolis High students. Work-study programs are available through the Vo-tech center and through school based DOP (Diversified Occupation Prograni), COE (Cooperative Office Education), and Marketing Education. Students may earn original or remedial credit through Evening High School and Summer School Programs offered on a county wide basis.

AVID (Advanced via Individual Determination) is a program that encourages non-college bound students to pursue the college preparatory program of studies. NJROTC (Naval Junior ROTC) is a program designed to provide leadership training along with camaraderie for students. The NJROTC program also accounts for one technology credit and/or one advanced technology credit if it is taken for three years.

MyRoad (The comprehensive guidance and network through Collegeboard) and Kuder (career search/skills assessment) are available for career, post secondary school, financial aid, and armed forces information.

Parent organizations include: Parent-Teacher-Student Organization, Athletic Boosters, Band Boosters, Human Relations Committee, and Citizens Advisory Committee.

Publications and Communications

Publications include: Annapolis Student Handbook, Principal's Newsletter, Guidance Newsletter, School Newspaper (The Anchor), Yearbook (The Wake), PTSO Newsletter, Literary Magazine (Perception), Newscast (Pantherama/P:tv), Weekly Bulletin and announcements provide immediate information on current issues and events.

Competency Requirements

The student shall complete studies in the areas of arts, physical education, survival, and the world of work and demonstrate competency in basic skills (reading, writing, mathematics and citizenship). This includes passing state tests in reading, writing, mathematics and citizenship skills.
