The Social Studies Department
at Annapolis Senior High School offers one of the most extensive advanced
placement programs in the country Beginning in 10th grade, five different
AP courses are offered. These courses prepare students for all seven of
the currently available social studies AP exams
These
courses allow the student to earn a higher grade point average (due
to weighted grading) and college credit before graduating. AP Modern
European History is available to sophomores and AP United States
History to juniors, while juniors and seniors may also take AP
Psychology, AP Government, or AP Economics. The Social Studies
Department believes there are currently many additional students who
could profit from these courses, and we encourage interested students
to give them serious consideration.
All
of these courses will prepare students for the corresponding Advanced
Placement Examinations in Maryland and the potential for earning college
credit. Students may earn advanced standing at some colleges and universities,
allowing them to complete their degree earlier and at reduced expense.
The cost of the exam is approximately $80 and is the responsibility
of the student.
Over 90 percent of colleges
award credit and/or Advanced Placement to students with acceptable scores.
The exams are graded on a five point scale with a 4 or 5 comparable to
a college grade of A. Scores of 3 and 2 are comparable to college grades
of B and C, respectively. All classes achieved a level comparable to or
significantly above the national average for other Advanced Placement students.
Our goal is to maintain this high level of achievement as we involve more
students in the program.
Whether students choose to
take the AP Exam(s) for college credit or not, they benefit from a challenging
educational experience that will better prepare them for college. For students
interested in honors level elective courses that do not lead to college
credit by examination, we offer World Civilizations, U.S. History, and
International Studies, Comparative Religions, and Humanities.
