Annapolis High School
ELP/IB Program

Programs

Since 2003 Annapolis High School has offered the Extended Learning Program (ELP) to students in grades 9 and 10 to prepare students for the International Baccaluareate Diploma Program in grades 11 and 12. In 2005 Annapolis High School was fully authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) to offer the IB Diploma Program.  The IBO is a non-profit organization dedicated to the goal of creating a better world through education.  IB world schools are recognized internationally for high standards of instruction and assessment and pedagogical leadership.  There are currently 1876 IB schools in 124 countries.  Two Anne Arundel County public high schools (Annapolis and Old Mill) and a third program at Meade High School currently undergoing authorization are among the over 500 IB schools in the United States.  Students who have earned the IB Diploma attend universities throughout the world and receive many benefits from American universities in the form of high admission rates, up to a year or more of college credit for IB coursework, and an exceptional level of preparation for college level research and writing.

Students receive grades in IB subjects based on a combination of written examinations that are graded by international examiners and internal assessements (papers, projects, portfolios) which are scored by their IB authorized teachers at AHS and externally moderated by the IBO in order to maintain consistency and high standards at each IB school.  To receive the IB Diploma, students must successfully take one course from each of six subject groups.  Of these six subjects, three courses will be taken at Standard Level (one or two year courses) and three courses at Higher Level (two year courses).  Students have a variety of options available to them to tailor their strengths and interests within this model while still ensuring that students are taking high level course work in all subjects. This requirement ensures a broad exposure across the liberal arts spectrum. Additionally, students will complete a course in Theory of Knowledge, participate in over 150 hours of Creativity, Action, and Service activities, and write an extended essay of up to 4,000 words (giving students an opportunity to conduct an in-depth research of a topic of special interest) as part of the Diploma Program.

Students in the ELP/IB program also have available to them and are encouraged to enroll in Advanced Placement (AP) courses.  Annapolis High is proud to offer nearly every AP class approved by the College Board.  ELP students are required to take a minimum of 1 AP course beginning in the sophomore year.  Students may choose to supplement their ELP/IB course work with as many AP classes as they feel capable of and/or can be accommodated by the schedule of the school day.

The ELP/IB program is available to all students in AACPS as a regional magnet program.  Students who are districted to attend middle school at Southern Middle, Central Middle, Annapolis Middle, Bates Middle, Severn River Middle, Magothy River Middle, Crofton Middle, or Arundel Middle are provided transportation in a consolidated bus stop model in order to be participants in the ELP/IB program at Annapolis High School.
