Students receive grades in IB subjects based on a combination of written examinations that are graded by international examiners and internal assessements (papers, projects, portfolios) which are scored by their IB authorized teachers at AHS and externally moderated by the IBO in order to maintain consistency and high standards at each IB school. To receive the IB Diploma, students must successfully take one course from each of six subject groups. Of these six subjects, three courses will be taken at Standard Level (one or two year courses) and three courses at Higher Level (two year courses). Students have a variety of options available to them to tailor their strengths and interests within this model while still ensuring that students are taking high level course work in all subjects. This requirement ensures a broad exposure across the liberal arts spectrum. Additionally, students will complete a course in Theory of Knowledge, participate in over 150 hours of Creativity, Action, and Service activities, and write an extended essay of up to 4,000 words (giving students an opportunity to conduct an in-depth research of a topic of special interest) as part of the Diploma Program. Students in the ELP/IB program also have available to them and are encouraged to enroll in Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Annapolis High is proud to offer nearly every AP class approved by the College Board. ELP students are required to take a minimum of 1 AP course beginning in the sophomore year. Students may choose to supplement their ELP/IB course work with as many AP classes as they feel capable of and/or can be accommodated by the schedule of the school day. The ELP/IB program is available to all students in AACPS as a regional magnet program. Students who are districted to attend middle school at Southern Middle, Central Middle, Annapolis Middle, Bates Middle, Severn River Middle, Magothy River Middle, Crofton Middle, or Arundel Middle are provided transportation in a consolidated bus stop model in order to be participants in the ELP/IB program at Annapolis High School. |
